Ecological Perspectives

David Gelb's film Jiro Dreams of Sushi follows a trend of increasing interest in food related documentaries. The film briefly touches on the modern shortage of tuna and other fish caused by Japan's overfishing problem when Jiro describes his increased difficulty obtaining high quality fresh catches. However Gelb chooses to focus diligently on Jiro's sushi craftsmanship, leaving this exigent environmental issue unexplored. Today's audiences are growing ever more interested in preserving biodiversity and respecting animal rights, and consequently there has been a recent wave of documentaries focusing on the social and environmental impacts of modern food production.
