Shortly after the initial release of Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Bill Goodykoontz, Ty Burr, and Roger Ebert reviewed the film for Arizona Republic, Boston Globe, and Chicago Sun-Times respectively. These reviewers unanimously approved of the documentary and expressed fascination with sushi chef Jiro and his two sons—even more so than their celebrated sushi. In fact, they are so captivated with film's subjects that they barely bother to comment on Gelb's cinematic technique at all, serving as a testament to the film's success.
